Clothing has always been a form of self-expression, representing the unique personalities and individuality of its wearers. While the roots of the fashion industry trace back centuries, it has transformed over the years as a reflection of changing cultures and societal norms. Despite these changes, one constant remains: clothing is a three-dimensional object. Thus, pattern cutting is a crucial technique used for constructing and creating clothing, and it is inseparable from fashion design.
That’s where the MODELISTE STUDIO comes into play. The studio founded by Genta and Britt Mori believes that fashion design should be integrated with the discovery of models. The Morrises have worked for companies such as Dries Van Noten, Raf Simons 205 Calvin Klein, The Row, Oscar De la Renta, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang etc.and when they looked at the process of creating designs for these companies, they noticed something in common.
“Sewing is a timeless craft that allows us to create unique and personalized garments that reflect our individual style and personality.”
For example, many companies would use clothes from the previous season and change some details to create a new design. In other words, clothing design is created by combining elements. In such a production environment, the Moris thought that a platform that could classify, quote, and search for details would be useful. This was the starting point for their project, and they plan to work on it until the end of their career.
Their goal is to make THE MODELISTE STUDIO a valuable platform for people involved in the fashion industry and those studying fashion. By combining design and pattern cutting, they hope to create a space where designers can easily access and share information, ultimately leading to more innovative and unique designs.
“Pattern-making it’s a balance of following the rules and breaking them to create something truly unique.”
The Modéliste Studio’s vision is to make fashion design more accessible to everyone. Their platform is being designed to provide a wide range of features that designers would find helpful. Moreover, they wish to cater to all people directly or indirectly associated with the fashion industry, including designers, bloggers, stylists, and students, among others.
The Modéliste Studio’s founders are not content with just creating a valuable platform for people involved in the fashion industry. They want to continue to expand and improve their platform, aiming to create an entire ecosystem of design elements, ideas, and inspirations. In short, their project is not just an innovative solution to streamline the design process but a bold movement that showcases new ways of creativity.
Their visionary approach not only encourages creativity, but it also shows that different disciplines can work collaboratively to bring designs to life. A designer should know how to communicate effectively with a pattern cutter, and vice versa. The capacity to work collectively towards a mutually reinforcing community.
